Monument Explorer:
Discover and Contribute
The main way of accessing our monument database is via the map, which represents each monument we have recorded with a pin showing the monument’s affiliation. The map can be filtered – by date, monument type, material, etc. –, explored via a text search, or browsed manually.
Hovering over a pin on the map will raise a text box containing a link to that monument’s entry page. Each entry page will eventually include basic data, a gallery of images, and an interpretive essay with full scholarly bibliography of research references and further reading suggestions.
Union
Use the ‘Union’ pin to locate monuments dedicated to the preservation of the Union and the celebration of the Federal Army’s battle triumphs and troops.
Emancipation
Use the ‘Emancipation’ pin to find sites of Black liberation and monuments to the abolition of slavery.
Confederacy
Use the ‘Confederacy’ pin to identify monuments and commemorative objects associated with the Southern Confederacy and the myth of the Lost Cause.
Other
Use the ‘Other’ pin to explore bipartisan monument projects and alternative forms of commemoration associated with the Civil War.
